When The Forrest Becomes The Sky You Will Find Your Home - 2025, Oil and Acrylic On Linen On Panel Framed 60x48

Jenn Shifflet draws upon a variety of disciplines to create her luminous, contemplativebodies of work. From canvas to glass to paper, Shifflet’s practice mines the poetic realms of impermanence of the spiritual within the natural world. Symbolic iconography is interspersed with radiating geometry and ephemeral abstractions. The sublime visual content is further enriched by thoughtful, deliberate material selections and configurations. Not content to simply use light thematically, Shifflet also harnesses it as a medium. Sunbeams, rainbows, and moonglow are recurring motifs throughout her work, all of which are augmented by the transparency, reflection/refraction, and iridescent properties that are key components to the pigments and substrates she creates with. The sense of the sacred and reverent is further enhanced by her choice of shapes. The octofoil –a symbol of renewal– and the arched forms, so reminiscent of religious icons and relics, reinforce the spiritual and meditative aspects of her work.

The challenges and changes of the last few years, both individual and universal, have brought forth a new perspective for Shifflet that has honed and shaped the direction of this body of work. We Are Fleeting Skies is the culmination and celebration of extensive research, experimentation, and inner questioning.

California-based artist Jenn Shifflet has been creating light-centered work exploring the intersection of art, nature, and the spiritual for over 35 years. Major personal influences include a fascination with light as metaphor that began after a near-death experience, thirty years of Buddhist practice, and a family lineage of artists. The art historical influences of Shifflet’s work include color field painting, Northern Romanticism, Desert Transcendentalism, the Studio Glass Movement, and Light and Space. Shifflet earned her MFA from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, CA. And is the recipient of numerous grants and residencies, including an affiliate residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts (2004-2007), Bullseye Artist in Residence (2015), a Pollock-Krasner Grant (2013), and Haven Foundation Grants (2020, 2021).
